Ack! Can it be? Are we almost at a whole year of Lil’ Ziggy on the outside? Hard to believe, I know. But here we are, at 11 months, and so much has happened since my last baby update. So I’ll just get right to it!
The above picture was taking at a local park yesterday, where Lil’ Ziggy sat in the baby swing for the first time! He wasn’t super impressed until I started pushing him a little harder. We may have a daredevil on our hands….
Clapping hands
As you may remember from my 10 month baby update, Lil’ Ziggy and I spent most of January in Ontario, visiting family and friends. And we spent most of that time in Ontario with bad colds. Despite our unfortunate health situations, Lil’ Ziggy still managed to figure out some key things. First of all, Ziggy started clapping his hands! It started off as just mimicking us clapping our own hands, saying “yay Ziggy!”, and now he claps his hands whenever I say it. It’s pretty adorable. Mealtime is filled with applause now.
Self-feeding
In addition to figuring out how to clap, Lil’ Ziggy also (finally) learned how to pick food up with his fingers and put it into his mouth. It may seem rather low on the scale in terms of development, but he spent MONTHS just pushing food around on his highchair tray, eventually flicking it onto the floor. It’s great to see him working on and improving his motor skills.
But, before you go thinking that this means less food on the floor, think again. If he doesn’t like something, or if he just doesn’t want to eat a specific morsel I place in front of him, he immediately picks it up, swings his arm straight out to the side and drops it like a crane at a construction site. Most of the time I don’t react, but sometimes it sort of annoys me, especially when the stuff he’s dropping is on the expensive side, like roast beef. He also doesn’t seem to like the same thing two days in a row, so I never know if he’s going to eat it or drop it. I sweep and mop my floor every day. I’m sure other mamas can relate!
Waving
This is another development that is more mimicking at the moment, but Lil’ Ziggy is now waving back when we wave to him. It’s really cute, and gets everyone laughing when he does it. He often does a clap-and-wave combo when sitting in his highchair. I’m trying to teach him to high-five and blow a kiss now.
Crawling
THIS is the by far the biggest advancement he’s made in the last several months. Lil’ Ziggy is on the move! It started off one day when I was sitting on the living room floor with him, and I put my cell phone down on the floor. Well, none of is many MANY toys could compare to the allure of mommy’s phone, and he made these sort of army crawl/flopping movements towards it.
Then, when we were visiting my mother-in-law’s office, he got up on his hands and knees and made two tiny, shaky crawls towards her desk! It was all downhill from there. I kept it a secret from Chris until I could get home, and boy was he surprised!
Now, of course, Ziggy is getting into EVERYTHING, and I have to put him in the jolly jumper or in his crib with some toys so that I can take a shower. Several times during the day, you’ll see a tiny, half-naked baby crawling out of his bedroom while I try frantically to get a new diaper on him. The downside to this, though, is that he is now getting to the stage where he’s hurting himself left, right and centre. We have our main floor pretty well baby-proofed, but he just keeps faceplanting into the floor. Last night, he took a tumble and ended up with a cut gum and a fat lip, poor thing. Mommy can’t prevent all the falls, but I’ll always be there to pick him up and give him a squeeze.
Who knows, maybe next month’s update will announce that we have a walker!
